Richard BurtLocal Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate, Richard Burt's petition on the No 10 website, calling on Gordon Brown to suspend the Regional Spatial Strategy has already attracted over 500 signatures in the first week since it was posted.

Mr Burt said he was "delighted" with the initial response and hoped many more would sign before the closing date on 3rd April.

"Local people are furious that their Conservative run councils have already signed up to these plans without putting up a fight," said Richard.

"The latest round of consultation is little more than shuffling the deckchairs on the Titanic and has left residents in the worst affected villages angry and frustrated.

"However, the Regional Spatial Strategy should never have been done in this way. That is why I want to give people the opportunity to protest about Gordon Brown's top down, centrally imposed housing plans. They are based on a 'predict and provide' assessment that bears no relation to current economic circumstances or employment prospects, but will encourage developers to seek the easy option of gobbling up vital green spaces that define our threatened villages over the next 20 years."

Richard's petition seeks to empower local communities and local councils to set their own targets based on local, sustainable housing needs assessments. You can find a direct link to the petition on Mr Burt's website at www.richardburt.org
