Liz Lynne, the LibDem MEP for Burton and the West Midlands, spoke to a meeting of the British branch of Soroptomists International last night at a meeting at Branston Golf and Country Club in Branston near Burton.
The MEP, who is the Vice- President of the European Parliament's Employment and Social Affairs Committee as well as a Member of the Parliament's Sub- Committee on Human Rights, spoke to the group about her work in the European Parliament on a wide range of issues including anti-discrimination and human trafficking.
Soroptomists International is an organisation of professional women that seeks to advance, through various projects, the cause of human rights and the status of women around the world. Their annual dinner meeting was designed to inform the groups British members of the organisation's successes over the past year (I will check this information, cannot get hold of Jane Bristow at time of writing).
Speaking at the dinner Liz highlighted the importance of the work undertaken by Soroptomists International:
"I am very pleased to have been invited to address Soroptomists International, the work they do in helping women all over the world is of fundamental importance to the spread of equality and human rights.
"I have, for many years, been fighting to end the horrendous practice of human trafficking that has seen an estimated 2 million women and children forced into prostitution or domestic servitude world wide. In the UK there are still as many as 4000 cases of human beings being trafficked, in the most appalling condition, every single year.
"Groups such as Soroptomists International play a vital role in helping end this suffering and I truly hope that they will continue their work to help make the world a fairer, more humane place."
Jane Bristow, the President of the British branch of the group added:
"We are very pleased to have had Liz Lynne here today and to be given the opportunity to hear about the work she has been doing in the fields of equality and human rights.
Soroptomists International is committed to bringing about the change needed to ensure that women are treated with dignity, compassion and respect no matter whether they are in the UK, the rest of the EU or the world as a whole."
